The Circuit of Mineral Waters of Minas Gerais is considered one of the largest mineral waters complexes in the world. Caxambu, located in the south of the state, is part of that circuit. This small inland town is well-known for its springs of mineral waters with medicinal properties.
In the 19th century, Brazil’s imperial family always went there for the waters’ properties, as well as to enjoy the mild temperatures that predominate in southern Minas Gerais for most of the year.
The Parque das Águas (Waters Park) is the main tourist spot, and has 12 natural springs of mineral waters. Some of them have been named after illustrious visitors, such as D. Pedro, emperor of Brazil. The waters from the D. Pedro spring is naturally carbonated and has medicinal properties that attract a multitude of tourists.
The park also has a hydrotherapic bath-house, installed in a beautiful building inside the park. It’s a great choice for those who wish to relax and renew their energy. Try one of the many esthetic baths and treatments that are offered in the bath-house.
The small-town atmosphere of Caxambu adds to its charm. To enjoy it, take a drive in a horse-drawn buggy around the town center, and shop for delicacies such as “doce de leite” (milk sweet), ambrosia, jellies and fruit compotes, and dozens of varieties of locally produced cheese.
With a pleasant climate, a charming small-town atmosphere, and several natural attractions, Caxambu is a great place for those who seek peace and quiet.
