Approved in 2020, but only coming into force in April of this year, the new Citizenship Law officially regulated in Portugal has flexibilized requirements for the acquisition of citizenships. This immediately boosted the movement of those who wish to leave Brazil. With the regulation of the law, from now on the grandchildren of Portuguese citizens, for instance, are not required to prove ties to the country.
It has never been easier for Brazilian citizens to apply for citizenship. Now, it is enough to prove that you master the Portuguese language to apply for the document, even if your relatives don’t have citizenship. According to specialists in Portuguese nationality, these changes in the regulated law correct the former limitations to the right for citizenship and are extremely beneficial to the Brazilian population. Besides the regulation, the decree adopts improvements in the process of applying for citizenship, expediting some aspects of the current process.
