Expatriation: Tips for a smooth transition

Changing countries needn’t be a difficult, traumatic experience. If the trip is well planned, the transition tends to be safer, more gradual, and free of big shocks. But how can we guarantee a tranquil transition? Here are some tips.

Firstly, the visa: It’s fundamental to know all about the migration rules of the destination country. Visit a consulate, or try a virtual contact. Informed of all the documents required for legal entry, collect all your material in a folder or envelope.

Reserve it. It’s doubtlessly the most annoying part of the process, but necessary for avoiding bureaucratic complications.

Another bogeyman for migrants is usually the adaptation to a new land. Of course, there’s no doubt that settling into a new neighborhood is complicated, especially if it’s in another country, possibly with a very different culture. With this in mind, the tip is quite simple: get interested in everything that refers to the new country. Learn the language, read the newspapers, study its history. There is little doubt that knowing more about your destination relieves the symptoms that come from ignorance, among them the main one: fear of the unknown.

Was the move motivated by new professional opportunities? Here, there’s an important difference. If you already have the new job, try to learn about the company, the structure of your employer and the corporate atmosphere, even your co-workers. That’s the adequate way to prepare a more agile adaptation to the new conditions of your life.

There are, however, those who migrate in search of opportunities, with nothing concrete in hand. In that case, studying the economic situation of the new country is fundamental. Will their expectations correspond to the reality that will be found? Remember that frustration in a foreign land is even more painful.

Finally, let’s take a look at expatriations with a deadline. These refer mostly to study periods and student exchanges. There are special visas for these situations – and requesting them should be carefully studied and done well in advance of the departure date. After that, don’t forget to reserve some time to enjoy the new country. Being in such a different place should be considered, above all, an opportunity for cultural enrichment. Do not waste it!
