Frontiers can be considered points of division or of union between territories. In the case of the line between Brazil and Paraguay, there’s no doubt that it unites the two countries much more than it divides them. This is because, lately, over 70% of the industries installed in Paraguay are of Brazilian nationality, according to information from the Brazilian embassy in the neighboring country.
According to the Brazilian embassy, the number of businessmen that consult the organ for orientation in migration grew 64% in relation to the last measurement in 2017: 445 consultations versus 272 in the previous period. The persistent crisis in Brazil, together with high taxes, has increased expatriation and the possibility of jobs for Brazilians in Paraguay. The migratory movement of these businesses also provokes the expatriation of Brazilian manpower, especially due to the high unemployment rate in Brazil and the lower cost of living in Paraguay.
According to information from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Paraguay loses only to the United States in relation to the total number of Brazilian expatriates. Currently, over 330 thousand people comprise the Brazilian community on Paraguayan soil. Due to this, the doorway between the two countries, consolidating their good relationship, is through the International Friendship Bridge, on the frontier between Foz do Iguaçu, in Brazil, and Ciudad de Este, in Paraguay.
In the business world, the economy in workers’ costs, electricity, and other taxes is the main attraction for this migration. The possibility of increasing profits and, thus, reacquiring competitive prices in the global struggle for consumers is the motive for the law that exempts businesses such as the Brazilian ones from import taxes. In compensation, the Paraguayan government demands that these businesses produce in Paraguay and export their products.
