Do you want to live outside Brazil and still guarantee a retirement pension for when you return? It’s actually possible to receive the INSS (the Brazilian Social Security System) benefit even if you choose to stay abroad. Learn how.
Thanks to international agreements, Brazilians have the right to receive the retirement benefit even if they don’t live in Brazil. To that end, you only have to continue contributing to the INSS, as foreseen by the Brazilian legislation in article 11 of law number 8.213/1991. According to this law, the retirement benefit, after a proportional contribution, is given to Brazilians and to foreigners living in our territory that are attracted by jobs abroad.
This is also valid for students, freelance workers, and even those who do not have a professional occupation, as long as they contribute to social security – in this last case as optionally insured.
It is worth noting that, to receive the benefit through the international agreements between Brazil and the new country of residence, the contributor must be in a legal situation.
Pay attention to the period of contributions and grace period
It’s important to understand that even though the Brazilian Social Security System has international agreements with several countries, each country has its own peculiarities. Among them, the rules that measure service time, as well as grace periods, and there even are terms for use of the contribution that must be considered before the concession of the retirement benefit.
